Wednesday, March 3, 2010
7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Allen Creek's Fives program allows, at most, a 1:8 teacher-student ratio, providing a child the attention needed to flourish. Children can go on to Kindergarten or 1st grade from here, and so this can be a Kindergarten option or serve as a year to prepare for school. Come learn about the invaluable benefits a 4 1/2 to 6 year old can receive through this model program.

Goals of Allen Creek Fives
Curriculum
The curriculum we have designed for the Allen Creek Fives classroom reflects our belief that children learn best when engaged in meaningful relationships with others in a safe and stimulating environment.
Opportunities, activities, and instruction are geared to essential learning skills identified for preschool and kindergarten. The following topics will inform our work with children: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Art and Music, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education
Emergent Curriculum and Project Based Learning in the Fives Class
We at Allen Creek believe children learn best when curriculum emerges from the daily life of the children and the adults in the program. Teachers will present lessons and help the students design projects that integrate goals of the program with the individual interests and skills of the students. Some topics and projects will be initiated by the students, and some by the teachers.
Long term projects are enriched by other daily hands on learning activities. These include group singing, group reading, movement games, and alphabet and number games. We know that all children learn in different ways and at different paces. In Allen Creek's Fives program, each child is challenged to work toward the next level. With an approach based on projects and group work, each member of the group will be able to contribute to the projects at his or her own skill level and be able to increase his or her skill levels with each project. In addition, projects that spring from the students' interests in collaboration with the teachers and parents allow learning to be a series of connections rather than a series of isolated lessons, soon to be forgotten.
